Prevention of skin damage to solar radiation in elderly patients: sunscreens

چکیده

Exposure to UV radiation can cause skin damage; among UV rays UVB are commonly considered to be more important in inducing photoaging and skin cancer; however in recent years some authors have claimed an important role also for UVA that can concur with UVB to damage the skin. UVB rays have a wavelength between 280 and 320 nm and are responsible for immediate skin damage represented by erythema. On the contrary, the skin damage produced by UVA, with a longer wavelength than UVB comprised between 320 and 400nm, is generally not clinically evident but will accumulate over the years, showing its effects later. In the past the attention of the formulation of sunscreens was placed on UVB protection, but nowadays, as we have mentioned before, UVA protection is also necessary. Moreover, UVA radiation is not shielded either by plastic or glass, so the skin can be exposed even in apparently protected closed spaces, such as the home or car. Therefore there are now filters or sunscreens available with complex formulas that effectively protect both from UVB and UVA The physical filters, also called sunblocks, made of metals such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, offer excellent protection, but they do take on a bleached unpleasant side effect. Some researchers have developed formulas with micronized particles to reduce this effect but the results are not always very satisfactory. On the other hand, the chemical filters are substances capable of using the energy of UV radiation to change their molecular structure. A possible solution has been found mixing physical and chemical sunscreens to obtain a higher sun protection factor (SPF) with reduced bleaching effect. However sunscreens must be used to protect the skin from excessive UV radiation, not to permit more UV exposure. Therefore we must not neglect the traditional precautions of wearing hats or protective clothing and avoiding the sun during the middle of the day.

The use of sunscreens should also be recommended in order to work against all kind of ultarviolet (UV)-induced skin damage such as photoallergies, skin wrinkles, sunburn or even skin cancer. Sunscreens contain chemical filters (organic absorb regularly UVB radiation) and physical filters (e.g., TiO2 and ZnO). The second group has been said to reflect and scatter UVB and UVA radiation. TiO2 is ...

Sunscreen- The Double Edged Sword

Sunscreens have long being recognized as substances to provide effective protection against the detrimental effects of solar radiation. The deleterious effects of sun exposure can be either acute (e.g. sunburn and drug-induced photo toxicity) or chronic (potential long-term risks of repeated sun exposures like solar elastosis, keratoses, induction of skin cancers, and alteration of immune respo...

Re: Sunscreen use, wearing clothes, and number of nevi in 6- to 7-year-old European children.

In a recent report, Autier et al. described the correlation of nevi development with sunscreen use in children (1). This apparently counterintuitive finding will be the source of extensive discussion and perhaps some controversy. However, when the dynamics of skin biology are considered, it is important to recognize this study for what it really tells us. Specifically, it reminds us just how ig...

Ultraviolet B-induced DNA damage in human skin and its modulation by a sunscreen.

The UVB component of solar radiation is a risk factor for skin cancer, the most common cancer in the Western world. Yet little is known about the induction of DNA damage in human skin by UVB and its modulation by sunscreens. Here, we apply a novel postlabeling high-performance liquid chromatography technique to quantify UVB-induced photoproducts in skin biopsies with and without sunscreen. The ...

Physical sunscreens: on the comeback trail.

Awareness of ultraviolet radiation-induced skin damage creates the need for the development of broad-spectrum, safe and cosmetically acceptable sunscreens. Being relatively inert, safe, stable and non-irritating, physical sunscreens are particularly useful for patients with sensitive skin who cannot tolerate chemical sunscreens. However, they form a thick visible pigment layer on the skin. To o...
